Native Plants and Pollinator-Friendly Habitat
Sogn Valley Farm grows a diversity of perennial forbs and grasses commonly found in Minnesota prairies, wetlands, and savannas. Our mission is to grow plants that will contribute to the restoration of native plant communities, and to augment pollinator habitat wherever possible. The species we grow attract butterflies, bees, beneficial insects, and other wildlife. As a certified organic farm, we never use persistent pesticides such as pyrethroids, neonicotinoids, or other toxic chemicals on our plants.
We sell plants in containers or by the flat for use in home gardens, rain gardens, and prairie or wetland restoration projects. We value the use of locally-adapted seeds; in fact, much of our seed stock was collected from remnant prairie and oak savanna on the Jokela farm in Goodhue County. The rest of our seeds originate from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. We can provide specific information about the origins of our plant stock upon request. Our inventory does not include native cultivars (aka "nativars").
Pollinator Garden Kits
New to gardening with native plants? Try it out on a small scale - maybe a 6’ x 6’ garden plot (approximately 12” spacing between plants) or up to a 9’ x 9’ garden (at 18” spacing). We’ve created a starter kit with 32 plants and 10 different species that are known to be highly attractive to bees and butterflies. The species were selected to provide a variety of colors and bloom availability throughout the growing season. There are also several butterfly host plants (e.g. Golden Alexanders are hosts to swallowtail butterflies; milkweeds are hosts for monarch caterpillars). Many species are also important plants for the endangered rusty patched bumble bee. Finally, the plants selected are also relatively “well behaved” and easy to establish as transplants. Note - we aim to provide kits as advertised, but it’s possible a similar species may be substituted based on availability.
