Native Plant Sale - Hail Storm Fundraiser

  • Sogn Valley Farm 4830 360th St. Cannon Falls United States (map)

We experienced a devastating hail storm on August 10, which caused an estimated $100,000 in crop damages. In order to raise revenue by any and all means, we're hosting a self-serve (on-your-honor) native plant sale this weekend to close out our remaining inventory. Come on Saturday or Sunday, August 22-23, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. We have over 60 species to offer, totaling about 100-150 flats. Plants are mostly in 2.5" pots, but some are also available in seedlings trays as plugs, ranging from 50 individuals to 125 individual plugs/tray.

NOTE! We have lots of your favorite species, including: several flats of butterfly milkweed, meadow blazing star, rattlesnake master, prairie dropseed, and purple prairie clover. These and many others were intentionally potted up later in the season to be sold next year as 2-year-old plants. They’re well established in their pots and healthy, but we’ve decided to sell them now instead of holding them through the winter.

Many of the older plants (i.e. grown from seed early this year) may appear “weathered.” They did, in fact, live through a treacherous hail storm. In addition, they’ve been cooped up in a tray with their compatriots for the growing season, causing some of them to be a bit stunted from competition with one another. Their root systems are hardy, and with a little tender loving care this fall, they’ll grow back strong and beautiful next year.

You may be wondering about planting natives in the fall...? We feel it is safe to plant well into September and still have plenty of the growing season left for perennial roots to get established in the ground. It’s helpful to dig slightly deeper holes for your transplants to ensure they don’t dry out and to mitigate the effects of frost heaving over the winter/spring.

ON-SITE LOGISTICS

Native plants are grouped and sorted roughly alphabetically by Genus (e.g. Asclepias/Milkweeds → ...Eutrochium/Joe Pye weed → … Liatris/Blazing Star → ...Symphyotrichum/Asters, etc.). You can use our cultural guide on our website for a list of species that we carry, sorted alphabetically by Genus. It's been updated to reflect exactly the species we'll carry at this plant sale.

Masks are strongly encouraged while on the farm to protect other shoppers and our farm team from exposure to coronavirus. Thank you.

PAYMENT

Suggested price will be $2/plant unless otherwise marked, and of course any additional contributions will be appreciated. If you do not have your own garden or a need for plants for yourself, consider donating plants to an organization in your community that might be interested in planting a pollinator garden. You could reach out to schools, churches, community gardens, or business in your area that might appreciate a plant donation.

We’ll have a locked box labeled “PAYMENT HERE” to insert your cash and checks.

Venmo payments are also accepted @DanaJokela.

Thank you for helping our hail storm recovery effort by purchasing native, pollinator-friendly plants!
